Days with Dad

On Monday mornings, as most of the country wakes up groggily and heads back to their jobs, we arise and see the day as most of you view Saturdays. We love Mondays! Steve puts in time for his job at the church on Sundays and most Saturdays, so he has Mondays off. We treasure this day of the week, and are thankful to Steve for guarding it carefully. He does a great job making Monday his day of rest and his day to spend time with us. This past Monday was lots of fun. We spent time playing in the fresh air at a near-by park, and in the evening we carved pumpkins. (It was our first time for carving pumpkins as a family. Those things are tough to cut through! But what am I talking about - it was Steve who did all of that hard work!) : )
"Is this how you do it, Dad?"

The finished product.

At the park.

Steve and Haddie (It was a chilly day!)

We brought Meshach with and he loved it.

Haddie looked like a big pink marshmallow all dressed up in her snowsuit.

Haddie and I.
It looks really dark, but it was only 11:30 am. It was quite cloudy. There were two eagles in the trees, though you can't see them in this photo.

Seth, experimenting. He was checking to see if the reeds would float. ; )
Ah, what a great day together.
Thanks for stopping by.

Looks like we have some budding artists on our hands...or should I say, on our walls!

They are quick too, I should add. : ) Steve and I were in the dining room, cleaning up after lunch. Seth and Haddie were having fun playing together. It had only been a couple minutes. Then we heard it. Silence. Dunt, dunt, dunt da! That tell-tale sign that something is up. So, we headed to the porch. Two little Picasso's looked up at us and grinned proudly. I have to admit that my dismay was short lived. Thankfully, their artwork had been accomplished in chalk, not permanent marker. It also was applied to my least favorite wall in the house - one of two that haven't been painted since we moved in. So, we did have a conversation with them about never writing on any other walls in the house... but we couldn't bring ourselves to be too upset about this one! :P

After our chat about the walls, Steve sat down on the wicker couch in the porch and Haddie joined him. She just loves sitting here. You can see the delight on her face to be sitting by her daddy on her favorite couch!

Today...

Empty Hands held high
Such Small sacrifice
If not joined with my life, I sing in vain tonight.
May the words I say
And the things I do
Make my lifesong sing, &
Bring a smile to you.
Let my lifesong sing to You,
Let my lifesong sing to You,
I want to sign your name to the end of this day,
Knowing that my heart was true
Let my lifesong sing to You.
LORD, I give my life,
A Living sacrifice,
To reach a world in need
To be your hands and feet.
So may the words I say
And the things I do
Make my lifesong sing, &
Bring a smile to You.
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
Let my lifesong sing to You...
(lyrics from "Life Song" by Casting Crowns)

This morning I woke up with a few ideas for new posts... but when my fingers started to type, this was all I could think about. Sometimes it's best just to share what's on our hearts ... so here it is.
May the way we live our lives bring a smile to you, Lord. This is our prayer.

She's Only Three

With permission, I have copied the following from a woman's blog I enjoy visiting (http://www.thevoiceofadventure.blogspot.com/). I think what cuts to my heart the most is that she is three. So is our son. I can't imagine anything like this happening to Seth. I wept when I saw the pictures and read about this little girl's situation. I know there are people suffering all around the world. I wish I could do something tangible for all of them....I'm thankful some thoughtful people have organized ways for me (or any of you who feel led) to help Abby. To find out more, continue to read. You can also see Abby's family's blog at http://www.riggsfamilyblog.com/. Most importantly, please take some time to pray for Abby and her family.

This precious little girl is Abby, and she needs your prayers. Abby is so many wonderful things. She is part of an amazing family. There are 7 wonderful kiddos in her family. 3 of those sweeties- including Abby came by way of adoption. Abby is a bouncing, happy, funny princess of a 3 year old....Now she is also a dear little warrior fighting for her life. She was diagnosed with Leukemia and life suddenly took a radical turn for this amazing family. Her concerns of which princess dress she should wear have turned to whether she will get poked or be able to keep her food down today.
OPERATION PRINCESS HAIR BEGINS!
There are so many battle scars she has right now in her fight against cancer...
Just one of the MANY things she has been forced to give up is her GORGEOUS princess hair and it makes her very sad.... What is it like to be the mommy that has to tell your 3 year old that she has to take medicine that will give her horrible sores, make her throw up constantly, and cause her to lose her hair? What is that like? What is it like to watch tears slide down your sweet baby's cheeks even in her sleep cause that's how much it hurts.
THIS is not OK with me. If I could I would make this go away. If I could I would change this- I wish there was a way. I know there are so many of us who wish that. We CAN'T MAKE IT GO AWAY! We just can't.
What we can do is give Abby back her princess hair. It's expensive and not something this family needs to worry about during this stressful financial time of paying for medicine and gas and hospital bills. We can not make this all go away but we can give Abby back her hair and make her smile.
SOOOOOO TODAY WE BEGIN....
OPERATION PRINCESS HAIR! This is your mission, should you choose to accept it...
1. I want us to buy sweet Abby one of the hats with hair pictured above- http://www.hatswithhair.com/
It's called a pony sport. It costs $228. It's made with real human hair. It's very comfortable and can be worn with any baseball type cap that Abby prefers.
After visiting with her mommy we feel this would be very comfortable and fun for everyday use at home and the hospital.
2. We will flood Abby and the other kiddos in the family with care packages that let her and her family know they are loved. If you feel you would like to send Abby or her family a present please e-mail me at
angelweir@gmail.com
We can all send Abby fun presents AND ALL SEND an ADORABLE BASEBALL CAP to wear with her new hair. Then everytime she is having a hard day her momma can bust out a new care package to give her something to smile about.
3. We are also going to buy Abby a custom made wig! Check it out here....
http://www.celebritystylewigs.com/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=493
I am so excited about this! It is going to be custom made to look a lot like her hair did before she needed to start chemo. So when Abby wants to dress up nice and look like the Abby she remembers she will have this. This wig will cost about $450. It is made of real hair and created just for her little head.
4. If there are donations exceeding the needed amount for the princess hair we will invite the family to use this money to help with whatever extra expenses they are facing during this difficult time.
It's hard for me to fathom what this family is facing. I want to do whatever I can to support them.
They are full of faith and strong. Cancer FEARS this little fighter! Let's do whatever we can to love and walk with this family during this time. I can't begin to imagine what they are facing but I PRAY that people would be there for me if we ever did walk this path.

TO HELP ABBY GET HER PRINCESS HAIR YOU JUST NEED TO GO TO www.thevoiceofadventure.blogspot.com. CLICK ON THE PAY PAL BUTTON ON THE TOP RIGHT HAND CORNER THAT SAYS "OPERATION PRINCESS HAIR."
IF YOU WANT TO SEND ABBY A CARE PACKAGE INCLUDING A CUTSIE NEW BASEBALL CAP PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT
angelweir@gmail.com
Thank you from the BOTTOM of my little ol' Texas heart for taking care of a little girl named Abby. What we do matters. What we do makes life better or worse for those around us EVERY SINGLE DAY. Let's take time to stop and care. Hugs, Angel
PS If you would like to spread the word on your blog PLEASE do it!! Feel free to take this whole post or part of it.

Needed: A Swiffer or Broom. A Collie or Some Chickens Work Well Also.

My mom's mom (referred to as "Granny") has told the story about how, when she was growing up in Ireland as a young child, the home she lived in had dirt floors. After meals, instead of sweeping up the crumbs dropped beside the table, her mother simply let in the chickens! They did a fine job cleaning up every little morsel, and when the floor was clean again, out they went!

Perhaps the inclination to do as my great-grandmother did is hereditary. ; ) With a three year old and a one year old (Haddie does contribute the most to food found on the floor) I find myself needing a broom at least twice a day, often more. Our collie Meshach has proven that he can out-sweep me, so I have happily turned some of the floor cleaning duties over to him! Although Meesh does not have full run of the house, he is used to the drill now (and by the time most meals are over he can be found standing at the entry to the kitchen, waiting for me to tell him to come in and enjoy the ruins!)

Confessions of a Closet Rap Fan

As the crowd of youth filtered through the auditorium doors, I walked with them, my feet aching a bit inside my heeled boots. The "Big Room" session had just ended and the students had some free time. Teens flocked to the volleyball nets, paintball arena, and the concessions. Thirsty, I followed the high schoolers who were heading to get refreshments. On the way, I bumped into my husband chatting with a married couple we recently met. A regional youth rally had brought us here, to a local high school. The four of us, along with many other adults, were chaperones for the weekend. It had been a few years since I had been able to help out in this way, and I was excited to take part again.

"Hey Nat!", Steve welcomed me to the conversation. "We saw you up there by the stage with your fist in the air and your knees boppin," he said with a smile. Immediately I felt heat rise in my cheeks.

Chuckling, the man standing beside Steve added, "You get into that rap music, don't you?"

"Well, no..." I replied, "It's not that I'm fond of the music...I did that because I just think that it makes the girls standing up there beside me feel more comfortable, more free to get into the music and enjoy themselves." It was true. That was the reason I had pushed aside my self-consciousness and mild embarrassment. I really wanted the youth to have open hearts and minds for what the speakers and musicians had to say. I wanted them to be stretched and to grow in their faith this weekend. Hopefully, setting aside their own self-consciousness and caring less about what others thought about them would help, I thought.

The conversation turned to other topics and after a little while I excused myself to find the water I was seeking.

The following evening I entered the auditorium with our youth group. Typical format for the each "Big Room" session had been that musicians took the stage for worship and rap sessions first, followed by a speaker. This evening was no different, and as the fog machine began to give the auditorium a concert-like feel, many of the youth and adults gathered around the stage. I did as well, this time donned with my comfy tennis shoes instead of heels.

On his cue, the Christian Rap artist walked onstage to the sound of a cheering audience, their arms raised in the air. They were ready. Beats began in the background while arms and knees started bobbing. The music artist rapped about a life of following Jesus while the teens listened and moved to the beat.

I smiled to myself. They were having fun. And the music sounded good. Maybe rap wasn't so bad. Maybe I even liked it a little bit. Hmm, maybe it wasn't only for the youth that I raised my arm and bobbed along with them.

I think I must confess...after this past weekend, I think I like rap....just a little bit. :)

The Wedding part 2

Here's some more pictures of Shaun and Tammy's wedding, courtesy of Jess. : ) (Too bad we weren't blogging when Steve's sisters got married...maybe some day I'll give you a blast from the past and post some pics from their weddings!)
1)The Bride and Groom
2)Haddie meets Great-Grandpa Albert for the first time just before the wedding
3)Seth had lots of fun at the dance. Here he's dancing with Steve (and some random little girl).
4)Aunt Jess, Tammy, Nat, Grandma Sheila, and Aunt Steph, shortly before wedding
5)Shaun and Tammy
6)Last minute touches in the dressing room
7)Haddie and Shaun during the dollar dance (Haddie is still holding her dollar - she didn't want to give it up!)
8)Brothers? Nope - cousins! (well, Seth and Caleb are actually second cousins, but it's simpler to just say cousins. They have a great time when they're together - along with Haddie and Caleb's little brother Daniel!)

Making the most of a short season!

We love Autumn - the cooler weather, the gorgeous trees, fewer bugs, football games... too bad the season doesn't last longer! We've been trying to make the most of Fall this year. Here's some pictures of the family having fun picking pumpkins at a beautiful farm nearby and going on an annual church hayride.

In a wedding together!

More wedding pictures are to come, but here's one of Steve and I. Unfortunately they're blurry, but you can see the pretty dress and cool tux that Shaun and Tammy picked out. We had a lot of fun being in our first wedding together as "bridesmaid and groomsman". :) It was a beautiful wedding. We're very happy for Shaun and Tammy! (stay tuned for more pics!)

All Dressed Up With No Place to Go! : )

Sunday evening Steve and I were excited to sneak away for a few hours while the kids were with his parents. We had a romantic date comprised of Walmart shopping and the Taco John's drive through! ; ) Anyway, we found a dress for Haddie and a cute little shirt and tie for Seth for the upcoming wedding. The next morning as we were putting away the things we purchased, Seth spotted the shirt and tie. He was so eager to put them on that we obliged. Of course Haddie was not to be left out! So, Monday afternoon, our little ones were found lounging on the floor, "all dressed up with no place to go!"

Yum!

What three things make me love a certain food? Color, texture, and fresh ingredients! Poppy Seed Pasta Salad has all three! I got away for a day at the lake with a friend of mine this summer, and she made this dish while we were there. I loved it right away because it is easy, and it has all three of the things that make a great meal or dish, in my humble opinion!

Here's how to make it if you'd like to try...

You need

*1 can of chicken breast in water
*1 box of Gemelli pasta (actually half a box is enough for our family)
*1 bottle of Poppy seed dressing (once again, you won't need the whole bottle - it can be a tricky to find too. Try to look for it near the Ranch dressings.)
*A bunch of green onions
*Dry cranberries, as many as you prefer. I used about one cup full.
*Slivered almonds (and a tablespoon or two of butter) I used about a cup of almonds.

1) Cook Pasta according to box, drain.
2) Drain water from canned chicken, then add the chicken to the pasta. Flake it up a bit with a fork.
3)Cut up green onions, as much as you prefer, add them to pasta.
4)Melt a little butter in a separate pan and add almonds. Cook carefully on Med-Low until toasted. Then add them to pasta.
5) Add dried cranberries to pasta.
6) Pour poppy seed dressing on the pasta and mix well.
*You can serve immediately while it is still warm, or you can refrigerate and serve later. Both ways are tasty! Make sure to add more dressing later if you aren't serving it right away, as the pasta will soak up some of the dressing.*

Enjoy!

(Thanks Jen!!)

Scalawag!

First, I have to ask, is "Scalawag" a big p.c. no-no? "Granny" used to call us that when my siblings and I were being little rascals, but she used it in a quite endearing way. When I used the word a couple years ago to describe Seth, someone gasped and was shocked that I would call my son by that term. Oh well. Do note that it is used in an endearing sense here also! It was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the above scene! ; )

Last night I was working down stairs in our office area, which is directly below Seth's room. At about 10:00 I started to hear some noise, and by 10:15 I decided I had better go check out what was happening.

It was hard to keep from laughing, even though it was long past Seth's bed time. Seth had turned on the light, striped his clothes, changed into boxers much too large for himself (they also happened to be inside out), placed a "band-aid" on his head (that's what he thinks "head bands" are called), and he was amusing himself by pretending to "skate board" around the room.

We are never at a loss for entertainment here, even if it does happen to be past bed time!

(He peacefully got back into bed and was content to stay there for the rest of the night, in case you were wondering!) ;)
